¡Hola! My name is Señorita Ellis. I graduated from Colorado State University in May 2015 with my MA in Spanish. While working on my MA, I also instructed Spanish classes at CSU. I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Cuba to conduct research for my thesis, a project based in both literature and anthropology. I collected personal narratives from Cubans about their experiences with the practice of Santeria, specifically looking at its relation to well-being and the mythology that surrounds the practice of offering food to deities (orishas).
Before starting my MA, I served as a TEFL Peace Corps Volunteer in Valle de la Estrella, Costa Rica. It was an incredible experience. One project that I am very proud of was JumpStart, a month-long English camp for 7th graders with no previous English instruction. I have traveled to various Spanish speaking countries (Nicaragua, Panama, Spain, Ecuador)...Ecuador being my first time to both leave the country and to ride on an airplane! All of these experiences really have been passion forming...a passion I would love to share with your students!
I love teaching language, especially Spanish! I believe that by integrating what ACTFL calls the 5 C's (communication, communities, culture, comparisons and connections) into the language classroom, students can form a deeper connection with the language, helping them to work toward fluency.
