Students learned several new vocabulary words in order to be able to understand more about this Mexican tradition, to understand a story and to be able to describe a video that we watched in class. At the end of November students learned vocabulary to talk about what they are thankful for.
Doy gracias por...- I give thanks for...
Many of them said things like familia (family), comida (food)...and other more serious things. Some said things like "no shave November", which made us all laugh! We watched a video featuring Spanish-English bilingual kids talking about what Thanksgiving traditions are like in their household. The younger kids listened to a song called "Doy gracias" and were able to fill in the missing lyrics on a worksheet.
Doy gracias lyrics:
Doy gracias por mis amigos porque me gusta jugar.
Doy gracias por la música porque me gusta cantar
Doy gracias por mi maestra porque me gustar aprender
Doy gracias por la comida porque me encanta comer
Doy gracias por mi familia y también por la amistad
El día de acción de gracias nos trae felicidad!

After Fall break, students began another mini-unit called "Me gusta" (I like), learning to talk about their likes and dislikes, as well as to ask each other. Ask students to explain when you add an "n" to the end of gusta! Hopefully they tell you that you add it when the word following "gusta" is plural.
me gusta (n)- I like
te gusta (n) - you like
le gusta (n)- s/he likes
Students did a lot of reading, translating from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, talking and listening during this unit. They finished the unit off by creating their own 4 page book with characters talking about their likes/dislikes.
